My Journey to Motherhood: IVF, Night Feeds and Creating The Nursing Nighty

My journey to motherhood wasn’t the most straightforward — in fact, it was anything but.

Having been friends for a long time, we decided fairly quickly that we would love to start trying for a family. But it didn’t happen for us.

After several appointments and tests, we were told that IVF would be our path to becoming parents, beginning a journey that would eventually lead not only to motherhood but also to the creation of The Nursing Nighty.

At the time I felt surprisingly calm about it. What I didn’t feel calm about was what happened next.

About a week later, Covid hit and fertility treatments across the country were suddenly paused.

Panic set in. I remember thinking that maybe it was never going to happen for us. Those few months felt incredibly long and uncertain, but eventually treatments resumed and our IVF journey began.

I started treatment feeling a mix of excitement, fear and naivety.

When we found out our first round had been successful, it felt almost surreal. After a straightforward pregnancy, our baby boy arrived by C-section at 39 weeks.

Nothing can truly prepare you for that moment. The love you feel is indescribable. He was perfect. He was everything we had hoped and dreamed for.

Almost immediately I knew I would love him to have a sibling — not straight away, but one day.

The second time around, however, was not so simple.

What had once come so easily took several rounds of IVF treatment. There were many ups and downs along the way and times when it felt incredibly difficult.

But eventually we got there.

Our second baby boy arrived three years after his brother, and our family finally felt complete.

Becoming a mum has been more than I ever dreamed of. It is harder than I ever imagined, there is more love than I ever thought possible, and motherhood has brought a depth and meaning to life I could never have expected.

IVF and the Unexpected Journey to Motherhood

Every journey to motherhood looks different. Some are straightforward, while others take time, patience and resilience.
